Well....of course.....we're into personal preferences here....
I always thought of TR's, MG's, etc. as 'up and coming' but poor young
adult's cars, in the 50's and 60's......spokes were 60 then and who could
afford the added expense of chrome????
Now......Jags....they were a step or two up.......and chormes were within the
budget........(and I don't think they even came painted!).....and the cars
were heavier and the 72 spokes were stronger.......
As I was "up and coming"....I did come up a bit.....and can now afford
whatever spoke configuration I fancy.......but..........
'67 TR4A IRS (third in Concours at a national VTR convention) has 60 spokes,
painted.......(it's such a little car.....60 is all it needs....)
'67 Jag XKE 2+2 restored, but never entered......(I didn't come up that
far!!!).... chrome rims, 72 polished SS spokes......yeah.......and they do
look nice......lots more trouble to keep up however, than the TR's!
My personal preference.......chrome spokes on a TR.....look a bit
gaudy.....but.....then....I could always change my mind......
As Henry Fonda once said in a movie, some years ago,....."What ever pleases
you........tickles me plumb to death!"
Clark
P.S. Chrome plated, steel spokes, undergo a process know as "plating
embrittlement" when they are made, and after a few years they begin to snap
like twigs, and will drive you crazy keeping them replaced..........I would
suggest that you never buy them......only chrome rims with polished SS
spokes.....guess it depends on how much you drive and how long you plan to
keep the car........on my Jag.......my guess would be that they begin to go
at about 70,000 miles.....I started replacing them with SS at that time, and
haven't broken a stainless one yet.......at more than 70,000 additional
miles. (Well, to be honest.....it isn't mine.....it's my wife's daily
driver.... I'm just the mechanic and tire changer.....)
