Chrome plated, steel spokes, undergo a process know as "plating
embrittlement" when they are made, and after a few years they begin to snap
like twigs, and will drive you crazy keeping them replaced..........I would
suggest that you never buy them......only chrome rims with polished SS
spokes....
I concur completely
My 4a has painted 72 spoke wheels English Dunlops (before the factory was
carted off to India). It's what I could afford and what was available. I
appreciate the added strength for the ocasional autocross or dial your own.
As to the comments above on "plating embrittlement... i recall reading about
someone who chrome plated the forward chassis structure of an XKE instantly
turning the car into a "static display". The embrittlement combined with
torsional and vibrational forces from driving would soon result in failure
of these stressed members. The epitome of "DPOdom"
Stainless or painted is the way to go imho.
Cheers
