I've found that properly gripping the stud is the secret (along with lots of
PB Blaster)...
I found this set of stud pullers at Harbor Freight Tools:

You will ruin the threads on short studs. Your studs can be reusable if you
can grip the non threaded portion.
Sears Craftsman has a stud puller for up to 3/4" studs if you need to pull
head studs.
I discovered all of this after paying a machine shop a lot of money to pull
studs for me.
I don't know if anyone mentioned this but an exact description of every stud
that goes in the block and head is in an illustration in the factory TR4
Workshop Manual. All these studs are available from The Big 3. You can go to
ARP for your studs if you like spending money!

This sounds like the color the oil filter cannister was painted on original
