So that's what you mean by deep - the wrench itself is thicker than a
typical wrench and contacts more of the square peg.  I didn't understand
before.  Now it is clear.

That is the whole point I was trying to make.  These things are
problematical in that you have a steel bolt threaded into an aluminum
housing mounted down by the wheel where it gets alternately splashed with
salty water and heated by the brakes.  Of course these things will
sometimes not work as advertized.  The user should be aware of the
potential of knackering the adjuster if care is not taken.  Whenever I
renew the rear brakes I fully disassemble these adjusters, clean them of
all corrosion and grease them up well before reinstalling them (as I'm sure
you do, as well).  I find that they work just fine for 10 years or so.  On
a car that has been in a field for 15 years these are not going to work and
will need this treatment.

When you buy a car of unknown history you don't know what to expect and one
may adjust fine but the other one will not and this is where adjusters get
abused.

Brakes with well maintained adjusters are a pleasure to adjust.
