Patrick,

I addition to the legal issues, it would be more "correct" from a heritage 
point of view to try to keep the commission plates in the hands of folks who 
may eventually reconnect them to a car, register the car and preserve its 
existence with the TRiumph community and BMIHT.

You may even have a rare first or last TR6 production commission plate...it 
would be unfortunate to see any plate confiscated by a DOT let alone one that 
was very rare!
