Chip,
I drove a Hillman Minx (I think it was a Minx) for a while in late 1969. It
did indeed have a "4 on the tree". The shift pattern was backwards from
most column shifters, though - first and second gears of the "H" pattern
were toward the dash, third and fourth were toward the driver. I don't
remember where to heck reverse was!

Mom's '58 Hillman Minx convertible definitely had "4 on the tree". Lots of
fun for a high school boy in the early 60s at Clover Park High...
