George,
I took some time with a hunk of 2 x 4, a hammer and a straight edge. I
carefully flattened the entire lip, retaining the formed stiffeners, to get
the entire lip assembly pretty flat. It was not perfect, just pretty close.
I'm talking a lot of tapping with the hammer here, not a major pounding.
(The same effort, with softer tools, will work wonders with valve cover
sealing too.)
I had no leaks on my old engine without any gasket sealer. I used Ultra
Blue on the new engine gaskets just to make sure I'd have no leaks in the
foreseeable future either.
