I've never had or heard of a TR3 getting air trapped in the system. Filling is
straight forward.

I do not fill mine that far. When cold I have about a quarter inch in the
bottom of the expansion header. Any more and I think it would just go out the
overflow when hot.
Does the lower radiator hose get hot as the temp gauge goes past mid-way? If it
does not then perhaps the thermostat isn't opening.
