Rotary sanders make a pattern like a record in the primer. DA sanders
combine the the rotary action with a random orbital action that eliminates
the rotary record type whirl. Both these sanders will work, but not to your
satisfaction if it is the only sander you own, they will featheredge but wee
not designed for making a panel FLAT. For this I recommend a "Board Sander"
available in air and manual types. If you are trying to save $ AND produce a
smooth surface but have little experience with a rotary/DA sander I would
recommend you steer clear of them or your final paint job will look like a
lake surface on a windy day.

Subject: Question on body work
I am well into getting my car ready to paint. Long story short, I was told
to get a compressor and dual action sander to finish up the body work. If I
get the compressor, I'm going to paint the darn thing myself. First off
though, what is the difference between a rotary sander and a DA sander?
Harbor Freight sells DA sanders, but they are round like a rotary. Can
someone explain? Are they really better than a rotary and then hand sanding?
Thanks.
