The distributors are the basically the same.  The reason for the longer
plug wires on a PI engine is that the distributor sits higher.  The PI
metering unit is driven off of a gear on a special distributor shaft that
connects to the cam.  The distibutor shaft then slide into the top of the
metering unit shaft.

I too learned the hard way about different length plug wires.  Do you still
have the longer wires?  I could use a set.

But why the difference?  The spark plugs are in the same place and the
distributor must be very similar.
