Steve, Jason and Listers,
Did you ck the bore on your slave and master cylinders before you installed
the new kit? If you have any wear or damage in the bore of either one you
will experience premature seal failure. You may also be getting residual
garbage out of the hydraulic line between the master and the slave. This
may be adding to your accelerated seal deterioration, those little bits may
be catching under the lip of the seal and causing it to leak fluid and
allowing air to enter the system. Which will cause the travel to shorten on
the push rods, because air compresses and fluid doesn't.
You may also consider replacing the line from the M/C when you change your
fluid or either of your cylinders. Plus always use a little Teflon thread
sealing tape on your connections, the old ounce of prevention method. These
may not always work, because some castings have been honed so many times
over the years that the bore is oversized, and your rebuild kit is designed
to work on a standard size bore. And I do like using DOT 5 brake fluid for
most of the reasons you mentioned, Except that moisture will creep into the
system because of the vent in the cap on your M/C, and it will collect in
the lowest point of your system. Requiring it to be bled periodically to
remove it before it attacks the metal of the cylinder.

For what ever it's worth, good luck and keep your patience.
