Jack,
A) I have always heard that a good high speed run will blow out the carbon.
Whenever you buy a car that was driven by a little old lady, this is what
you're supposed to do.
B) From what I've read on the list, don't worry about the no-lead gas, the
seats are already hard enough.
C) Some have mentioned ignition timing as being related to dieseling, but I
can't see how it's connected at all. Remember, the gas is igniting with the
ignition shut off. The reason I thought of this is I also own a diesel car, and
it diesels really well with no ignition system at all.
D) Another de-coking method I've heard is to pour some ATF down your carbs with
the engine revving reasonably high, so it doesn't stall. This apparently works
great and causes lots of exciting smoke. It could be tough with side draft
carbs though.
Well, hope it helps. If I were in your shoes I'd immediately try suggestion A.
Regards,
Jim Wallace

Subject: TR6 Run-on
My newly purchased TR6 diesels after being shut off. I know this is
because something in the combustion chamber is too hot and glowing and
shouldn't be. Before I remove the head and decoke it, is there any
chronic cause for this in TR6's?
Additional info: The engine has 46,000 miles on it, compression 150 on
all cylinders, plugs look normal, car has never had the head off to my
knowledge, and since it doesn't have hard seats the previous owner added
a lead supplement to the gas (maybe this formed some deposits).
If I can fix it without removing the head I'd like to, but if I remove
the head I'll have hard seats installed.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
