We had a "transmission jack" at the high school mechanics class when I was
there... I never got to play with it, but its purpose was similar to the
wooden job you mention.  Didn't remember it being "firm" though, more like
"floppy".  Perhaps it was broken.

We only did one transmission job (read= ATF oil spill) in the shop.  And
the car was way up on the hoist so the jack wasn't used.  All other tranny
work was done out-of-car, after pulling the engine.

Build a gantry crane in your garage!!  Buy a forklift!!  There are lots 
of easy solutions :-)
