Probably little bits of the rubber fuel hoses that are scattered
throughout the fuel system.
Next time you feel ambitious (and don't have much gas in the tank),
probably should go around an replace them all. Materials costs is about
$4, time consumed... more.
It would be a good idea to do the ones found after the fuel filter for
certain, though. The hoses on my car looked quite original (braided
cloth-over-rubber) and were also quite cracked and perished-looking. I
never noticed any sludge due to them... BUT I never had the engine running
at the time either :-)
