The hole you are referring to is called a "weep" hole. It is there to allow
any water that gets past the mechanical seal to weep out without
contaminating the bearing and causing a siezure. Kind of gives you some
borrowed time. The "good old days" grease nipple hole was elsewhere on the
pump.
