If you back up with the OD engaged, you will blow up the
OD. Is it rebuildable... sort of like a house that burned
to the ground, yes, sort of.
According to legend the record is 20 ft in reverse, this
contest was won by a race car that dropped into gear at
3,000 RPM and launched itself and the car about 20 ft.
prior to the implosion.
ADDITIONAL NOTE ABOUT OD CONVERSIONS:
These are available from the U.K. for about $1200 for the complete
trans/OD with all rebuilt parts (J-type, A-type is more). J-type
will fit ALL TR6's by the way.
We are currently experimenting with 240D Volvo J-types available
everywhere. Volvo offered enhanced clutch/relief valve/pistons
in the 80's making the unit MUCH more robust and likely handle
race applications as well as the stock A-type. I just received
all the correct Volvo manuals. Note there is a P-type with no
speedo output, do NOT use this, Volvo till 85-86 used J-type.
We have a Triumph J-type and Volvo J-type conversion in progress.
Its still not cheap by the time you buy "all" the bits to convert,
little items like the right angle speedo drive, new speedo cable,
OD mainshaft, oil cam, clip, spring, circlip and of course a trans
rebuild kit, plus OD rebuild kit. And do not forget the top cover
switch and new wiring. The top cover vibration damper strap and of
course the aluminum (gold) extension adaptor. Plus the OD core!
(60+15+85+45+2+2+2+150+50+12+20+5+100+ODcore) If the OD core was
free and you needed NO new parts during the OD rebuild (unlikely),
you're looking at $547 plus labor and special tools...
More later on the $80 OD conversion...
