Today I looked at an 80 Spit that was like new except for a couple of
things. One thing was the clutch. It does something strange and I need
the collective wisdom of the list before I make an offer for this car.

At times when the clutch pedal is pressed it falls to the floor like the
pedal was connected to NOTHING. No noticable resistance other than the
return spring. If the pedal is raised and pressed again it works the next
time (every time according to the owner). It is not losing fluid so I
don't see how it could be master or slave cylinder. I could not explore it
enough to learn if the slave was moving. The only thing I could think of
(on the way home) was a little far fetched. If the pin were missing in the
master clevis then the lever would push anyway except maybe one time in 10
it would fail to push. If I had thought of it before I left it would be
easy to check. I don't think this is the answer since their mechanic would
have found that some time ago. Also, I don't think that would work so
reliably most of the time and just fail occasionally.

Any suggestions or thoughts on what to look at. Unfortunately the car is
100 miles away and I can't play with it very easily.

Sam
