I just got this from another lister.

 Yes, the head studs are short and use 3/8 fine thread nuts and are under
the manifold flanges.  The other row of cyl. head nuts is under the valve
cover.  While the bottom end in those engines was very strong, the cylinder
heads had a propensity for cracking as well as smaller valves than the later
engines.
