I got the same crap when I bought mine. I'm convinced that the people who
advised me were simply dirty on Triumph for abandoning the open-air roadster
design (which they had good reasons to do, at the time).
The TR7 (+ Dolomite) head design is fussy, but if looked after (ie. regular
oil & filter changes + coolant system maintenance, and tune-ups), there
should be no more engine problems than with most cars. Mine went at least
120,000 miles before I had to do engine work. (I then blew a head gasket
because I didn't read the manual properly - a mistake a pro mechanics could
make if he was unfamiliar with the model: try to get a well-recommended
specialist to do any engine work on the car!)
Don't get rid of it unless it's a wreck. Then, keep it anyway (for a parts
car), and get another one!
P.S. Please read my item about the "junk" that came 3rd in the Targa
Tasmania to your friend.
