No, with the slave cylinder removed I can grab the actuating rod and 
pull it in and out.

At first I thought maybe I had the throw out bearing in backwards but 
I think that would have been pretty obvious when I installed it!!

Maybe we need to swap pushrods!!

The pinch bolt slides into a groove on the side of the slave cylinder 
which positions it at a specific point.  I wonder if I somehow ended 
up with the wrong pushrod.  The car was not drivable when I got it, 
and I know there was some engine work done to it before I got it.  So 
maybe they somehow messed up the pushrod.  

Can anyone out there tell me what the correct length for the push-rod 
that connects to the operating lever on a Mk1 Spitfire?
