Actually, Sir John Black, who owned Standard Motors, tried to buy Morgan
but
was rebuffed. Concequently, he bought the rights to the Triumph name
for use on motor cars. Triumph, who made cars and motor cycles before
the war was bombed out by the Germans in WWII. Sir John was envious
of Bill Lyons and his Jaguar line of cars and wanted a piece of the
action so he bought the Triumph name and started a new car company.
Graham Robson has a very interesting book about the history of Truimph
which I highly recommend.
