If you've got constant voltage to the coil, with no resistor in place, I'd expect you'd be seeing a current draw when the car is off. This would be a sometimes type of thing, depending on the position of the distributor when the engine stops turning. Such a constant current *might* fry a coil, but I'm don't think it should. The coil should be made to take such conditions.
