I have responded to Peter directly on this, and answered some of his
specific questions. Having been through this process recently with my car,
I can offer some observations:
Like anything else that relies on the skill of an individual, quality body
and paint work does not come cheap. Find a shop and a guy that is
interested in doing the work, not just someone who gives an estimate. Show
him the car and let him tell you what needs to be done. This will be a big
learning experience for you; rely on an expert's advice. Any good shop will
not let bad work out the door. You will be surprised at what these guys see
when they look at a car; he'll see ripples and dings you can't. He'll want
to fix all this kind of stuff; let him. The car will look great when it's
done. Spend the money.
I spent about $4K for the body and paint work on my car, which does not
include the price of all the new panels. I got a bargain. It also looks
great!
