Peter,
GOOD FOR YOU! You've probably bought the best Marine tool a Triumph
Automobile have ever benefited from... ;-)
The threaded female connection is intended to take the threaded male
nipple on the plastic tube oil (or grease for that matter) containers
the Mercury Marine Co sells. They are served with both oil and grease
in them and one buys the type needed for the application one is working
on. The one I've got with gear oil in it is labeled:
QUICKSILVER GEAR LUBE Premium Blend (=QGLPB in text below)
Part No. 92-19007A24
Net 10 fl. oz. (296ml)
It says in the text on the reverse side:
" For use in gear housings of outboards and stern drives. QGLPB
provides superior lubrication and corrosion protection for high or
low horsepower marine engine lower unit gears under varying engine
operating conditions.
QGLPB has improved emulsifiers to help protect gears should water
enter the gear housing. Tackifiers improve oil film adhesion to the
gears to maintain lubrication. Extreme pressure additives protect
gears from metal to metal contact and excessive wear. "
How much of this sales talk is pure snake oil I don't know, but it
sure sounds good enough for me. I guess water might seep into our
trunnions as well... And Gear Oil is just what Hypoid Oil is, and
Hypoid Oil is what ST specified for our dear Triumphs front
trunnions...
I do like this thingie - no more oil everywhere but inside the
trunnion - as intended...
Yours
Odd
