Hi all, here is an update on earlier postings re National Racing Colours,or as
most of you say 'colors'...
The first time such colours were used was in the Gordon Bennett Trophy teams
in 1900. Some were permanently adopted - yellow for Belgium, blue for
France, and white for Germany,(later becoming Silver). The American team
colour in 1900 was red, later to be adopted by Italy, while blue and white
became the American colours.
Green,a "lucky" colour on continental Europe, was given to Charles Jarrott in
1901 by the Paris-Berlin Race organisers to offset his racing number 13.
Today the requirement that cars be painted in the colours of their
entrants, irrespective of the nationality of the driver or country where the
car was built, has largely fallen into disuse.(source The Guinness Book of CAR
facts & feats,1980 edition).
I hope this helps!
All the best
