Drew, since even the certificate is only as good as the factory records
were (although there have been very few documented errors in same), and
it costs about $40, you're much better off looking under the dash or
under almost anything else bolted or glued to the main body tub. Remove a
trim panel, pull back some carpet, undo the capping across the front of
the "scuttle", etc.
Likely the underside of the scuttle or the "cockpit" side of the firewall
are the easiest to view and, unless the car has been restored or
otherwise completely rebuilt in the past, you should find the original
color there.
