Chris - That's bad news and good news. The bad news is that some of these
transmissions are defective the good news is you have restored my faith in my
diagnostic abilities. Before learning of this my analysis led me to believe
that the one way device in the OD must be slipping. Having never taken an OD
apart I could not trust my judgment, the transmission was rebuilt by someone
else who I trust and makes his living working on LBC, specifically lots of
TR's. Question is it possible to know from just looking a the parts and know if
one is bad or is the only way to actually drive it?

Ralph, et al -
Really bad news....this unfortunately is the case. I did the same
swap, late model single rail w/OD into my 72 and sure enough it would slip at
the same circumstances you describe. This was the general consensus at the
time:
Taken from page 29 of the Kipping catalog, second edition, July 1995
A few units left with badly made one way bearings, funny noises and
slipping when starting off (original fitment 79-81 cars). If unit behaves
very differently when hot and cold, the cause is the solenoid, not easy
to repair.
I would add to this that the symptoms become almost predictable, such as a long
freeway cruise in O/D, followed by a complete stop at the exit. Slippage will
more than likely occur should the clutch be let out too fast and the stomping
of the gas pedal is a very likely contributor. I have decided to live with it
for the time being as I grew tired of pulling the trans (after the fifth time).
I will have it rrebuilt when the shell goes in for paint (prob'ly 98).
Please keep me posted with any further info you should come by and/or
recommended rebuilding sources.
Good Luck
