I'll step in here and add my two cents worth. I think the main reason that
BL decided against the drain plug was because at the time (new cars) people
didn't keep them long enough to worry about changing the differential fluid
(better oils/longer intervals). Probably to save a little money by
eliminating an additional procedure (drilling and tapping). There is no bad
reason if you have the diff out and are working on it anyway, to not drill
and tap for a drain if you have the ability (the castings are already
designed for them), and every reason to do it. It makes it SO much easier
to drain and refill than to try to suck it out of the filler hole (as
suggested in the manuals)! In fact the early diff's had drain plugs in them
- I always drill and tap for a drain in any differential I work on!
