I had my diffy out last fall to replace the mounts and weld up a cracked
mount (sound familiar?) and in my usual fashion, I asked the mechanic to
replace the oil seals and the hypoy and to drill & tap a drain hole for a
plug. You should have seen the look on his face! You'd think I asked him
to upholster the thing with Angel Hair or something! His observations was
"Don't you think there are enough places for the oil to leak already? " He
also doubts that there is much need to replace the oil, only to keep it
topped up. I also suspect that the oil that he drained out was probably put
in at the factory in the "Home Land". The stuff was still fairly clean but
what do I know? I decided to go with his recommendation since he is at
least as finicky as I am (did you catch the Saab Mechanic on Seinfeld? the
one who kidnaps Jerry's car so it'll get the service it deserves?) Although
it goes against instinct (and C.A.R.'s practises). I think you'r3e better
off leaving the diff case as Coventry created it.
