In response to the question about the V8, at the recent Battle of
the Brits here in Detroit, there was a guy with a 2.8L Ford V6 and
automatic shoe-horned into a Spit. The Spit had been a basket case
with either no engine or a bad engine, and the guy had the engine
sitting around, and ... well, you can see where it leads. One of
the problems the owner had encountered was that it was necessary
to mount the engine further back then the normal Spit engine, and
to fabricate a new firewall, move the seats back, (no movement of
the seats, and less legroom than original), cut and weld the floor
so that the automatic would fit through, etc. He said that it went
like stink, but he had to upgrade the brakes yet.

A good number of years ago, I saw a Spit for sale that had a 2.3L
4 cyl. in it. What a hack job. The engine was so much taller than
the Spit 4, that it was necessary to cut a huge hole in the bonnet
in order to close the bonnet.

If I were going to put a different engine in a Spit, I would lean
towards the GT6 or TR6 engine, at least most of the engineering
work is already done for you.
