I recently sold what had been a very good tow vehicle:
a 1980 Ford f-100 pickup, 1/2 ton, 2wd, 300ci straight 6, cheapo stock
except for the Warner tow-truck 4-speed trans, w/ creeper 1st gear.
Towed Pintos, BMWs, TR-6s, and many trailer loads of green firewood using
only bumper ball hitch (2"), no problems ever at 45-50 mph, and when sold
it still had the original clutch, with 130,000 miles on it.
Sold for $1000. and might be available from present owner. Cars were
flat-towed using just tow-bar. They were easier (and lighter) than the
loaded trailer, which was the back half of a '63 Dodge pickup.
Adapt, improvise, overcome, let someone else cough up the $25,000+ for
a 4wd status symbol that never leaves suburbia.
