Hi Tim

As far as a good oil to use...our English car club ( central island branch )
looked into what's available as far as oils containing zinc...

"... Since 2006, a new designation "API Service SM" (in a decal on the
label) has been introduced with no zinc.
This is meant for modern engines (since at least 1996), with steel camshafts
and/or roller lifters.
If the decal also says "API service SL or SG", it can be used in older
engines.
Major brands of motor oil we've used for decades like Castrol (BP-owned),
Pennzoil (Shell-owned), Quaker State, Valvoline no longer contain zinc.
Zinc is being phased out in diesel oils too (Shell Rotella) and high mileage
oils (Pennzoil), because of catalytic convertors in diesel engines.
Kendall GT1 20W/50 (ConocoPhilips) is about the only brand I've found on the
Island containing adequate zinc, about 1%
(and liquid Titanium, which is said to have antiwear properties similar to
Molybdenum)...."

We also as a club made a deal with the local ( Nanaimo ) Columbia fuel
dealer to sell to us at a 25% discount by the case which makes it $4 a litre

I have some here and can easily get more if you'd like some sent down...

Here's a link to this product Kendall's site ...

Subject: [Tigers] Engine run in

Hi to all,

There is a bewildering array of conflicting information on the www regarding
the engine run in process. I have my newly rebuilt 260 nearly ready to fire
and am looking to the list for what is the best way to accomplish this job
in a way that will ensure a long and happy life for the engine (and by
extension, me).

The engine is .030 over and apart from that was restored to stock specs.
Questions might include;

-type of oil to use

-length of time before oil changes

-best rpm loading and duration of run in periods before allowing engine to
cool

-best way to ensure the engine will be free of air pockets (taking into
account the presence of the heater core

-best type of coolant to use

-thoughts on the use of synthetic oil during run in and/or after run in

It was gratifying this week to turn the key and hear her turn over without
having to grab a fire extinguisher, if you know what I mean...

Thank you,

Tim
