Steven,
Thanks for your reply ... I should clarify the design of the heat
shield. It is designed to mount directly to the muffler in three ribs
that create an airgap around the muffler. The heat pad will be mounted
to a surface that is about 3/4 inch(3 quarters of an inch) away from the
muffler. I tried buying these shields locally and no one has ever
ordered them from the warehouse (they might be new) so there is a gap
between the heat reflector and the muffler. The other benefit is that it
is supposed to cut down sound as well.
The link to the actual item at summit is below and it may better
illustrate what I am thinking:

Subject: Re: Heat Shields
Hi Tim
and my plan is to mount the heat barrier to the heat shield and then
strap the heat shield assemblies to the mufflers with the provided
straps.
Not the way I understand muffler heat shields to work..
The heat shield is a reflector and radiating surrface
coupled to the air.. you want both sides of it to be cooled
by what ever air flow there is, Amazing how effective
one more layer of metal only a few tenths of an inch
from a really hot catalytic converter can be. I learned this when
my truck's cat cvtr lost the shield and the interior carpet almost
cought fire....
If it still isn't enough mount the heat barrier
on the chassee metal below the fuel pump,
seperated from the heat shield.
