Hi Phillip,
You must have one of those Tiger exhausts where the muffler shop tried
to go over the rear axle or something. Even the factory exhaust, with
its admittedly small 1 5/8" tubing, went nearly straight back, through
the mufflers, and under the rear axle on its way out the back. The
LAT-74 exhaust was 2" diameter with some crimping to go through the
passthru holes on the chassis, but it was as close to a straight shot
out the back as you'll ever get with a streetable exhaust system. There
are lots of Tigers out there today with 2 1/4" exhaust systems, and when
you compare the performance obtained from the stock manifolds and
exhaust, to headers with a 2" or larger system, there will be quite a
difference, especially if the engine has been modified.
As far as practicality goes... For the way most of us use Tigers these
days, a header system will last probably ten years. Ask Jim Webber or
Funbeam Chuck, who do multi-week trips in their Tigers every year. For
the price of ExtrudeHoning a pair of manifolds, you can buy at least one
more set of headers. Also... you can buy headers by placing one phone
call. Try to buy the Tiger-specific exhaust manifold on short notice.
Best regards,
Theo
