Bondo is made of talc, and it absorbs moisture just like baby powder.
If possible, try to find Evercoat filler, it is much easier to work
with.
It comes in metal and talc base.
Or fiberglass is another option. FG will fill any rust holes and seal
the metal then use Bondo over the FG.
Be sure to get all the rust out and treat the metal with any good metal
prep/rust converter. I use Rust Mort, there are other brands.
Caution with Rustoleum primer and paints. They contain fish oils and are
usually NOT compatable with any other brand of paint. Unless you use
rustoleum over rustoleum and DO NOT sand rustoleum to recoat, this
releases more of those fish oils and the paint will wrinkle. (been
there)
Any cheapo SANDABLE spray bomb primer will work fine and can be painted
with just about any brand except maybe rustoleum.
The key is get all the rust. Convert what you can't see with Rust Mort
or Oxysolve or any rust converter. Not those spray paint rust
converters, use the acid stuff and a brush. Seal it good with fiber
glass or a sealing/etching primer then proceed with plastic filler.
Bondo works on bare metal, Evercoat can be used over a good
sealer/primer.
Just remember Bondo or talc based filler will suck moisture from
any/every where and this makes bubbles in a nice paint job. It is fine
if the metal has no holes and a sealer is put over it before a primer.
Then be carfull that you don't sand thru the sealer.
Good luck
