Mike,

I have found that in general the spray can primers are fine (I get 
mine at Ace Hardware fwiw). However, primer itself can absorb water, 
so you should topcoat with a compatible paint as soon as possible. I 
repaired rust on the front lip of my bonnet in '97 with hardware 
paints and primers and there is absolutely no sign of rust there 
after 3.5 years of constant use.
