Wish it was that easy, Paul.  But it looks to be a broken or displaced circlip
holding the stub axle inside the differential, allowing the axle to slip out
far enough to where the differential can't engage it.  The weirdest thing is
that I had no clue other than a bit of rattling on the left side.  I parked
the car, started it later, and it wouldn't move!  So this failure finally
kicked in the split second I parked the car.  Very strange.

Thanks to everyone for your helpful replies.  I'm going to pull the half shaft
tomorrow and try to get this thing taken care of with the differential still
mounted, but we'll have to see how it goes.  I'm hoping for the best.

  rod (shift finger bolted to the rail)  has come
  loose and is not fully moving the shift forks?
