Richard, Gary, etc.,
My understanding is that the "new" bumpers are of a thinner gauge steel,
slightly rougher around the edges and that the chrome process might not be
done in the desired triple plating method (copper/nickel/chrome). I recently
came across some bumpers which I suspect are repros. The chrome was not
pitting, it was actually flaking off. I've had several sets of original
bumpers rechromed for my projects and in my opinion, this is the only way to
go. It's less expensive than buying new, and they're guaranteed for life. At
least they are by the place that does mine.
Take care,

Gary,
One time I heard about re-chromed bumpers being better than new ones
currently on sale was from TRGB, who replaced the front bumper and one of
the over-rider boxes for me after a speeding driver brushed across the
front
of Daffy while I was pulling out of my driveway a couple of years ago.
Cost
wasn't an issue (for once!) as the repair was paid for by insurance. They
used a re-chromed bumper, and it's held up OK so far! I was happy to
accept
that advice, since I had heard it elsewhere as well, but I can't for the
life of me remember where - it was a few years ago now.
Richard
