A spit tour of the south of france sounds like an excellent idea
to me. Many wonderful back roads...

I've done a couple of 1800 mile road trips (in the western U.S.)
in my spit, and carried a fairly modest supply of tools and parts.
Fluids (oil, water, brake fluid)
Small socket set
Vise grips
Couple of screw drivers.
A few bits of wire and hose.
Duct tape + electrical tape

Having contacts for a few members might help you locate
parts or an LBC mechanic if you do get into trouble, and you
can probably meet some interesting folks along the way.
