The TRF Spit catalog has a page from the factory parts book that shows
the optional "Continental Touring Kit". In addition to the usual hoses,
belts, bulbs, etc., it includes four(!) spare engine valves (but no head
gasket). I guess it was considered practical to fix a swallowed
valve by the side of the road...
Myself, I carry very little: A belt, a piece of header hose, and
some wire, in addition to some flat wrenches and a couple of screwdrivers,
and a Leatherman tool.
IMHO, the best place to carry a spare part is not in the trunk, but
mounted in its correct operating location. In other words, keep
your hoses, belts, etc. in good condition and they won't be any more
likely to fail than the ones on a new car. Same for lamps. My
4-year old Subaru has more spare parts (mostly lamps and fuses) in
it than my Spit, simply because it gets driven a lot more.
Once, a spare wiper blade came in useful for me, after a giraffe
damaged one, while going through a drive-thru jungle safari.
