Did the new fuse blow as soon as you fitted it? Or only when you turned
something on?

Get a whole bag-full of fuses before you start, you'll probably get through
a few! And make sure they're the correct rating (35A)...

Make sure that all the items controlled by that fuse are off. They should
be:
Horn
Courtesy lights (so make sure the doors and boot are closed!)
Radio
Cigarette lighter
Hazard flashers

I think that's all...

Now, replace the fuse. If it blows straight-away, you've got the toughest
job - the short must be somewhere between the fuse and any of the systems it
controls, or the switches for those systems. Some of these systems have a
live supply to the application, then a wire to a switch which provides the
final route to ground (e.g. courtesy lights), while others put the switch
before the application (e.g hazard lights), and then you've got those
operated by relays...

If the fuse does not blow straight away, be glad, you have the opportunity
to narrow the options down! Try each system one by one, and check after
each if the fuse has gone. When you have identified the dodgy system, you
can check all the relevant switches and the application itself to try and
find the short.

You REALLY need a wiring diagram to do this sort of stuff. If you've got
your Haynes manual already, there is one in there (well, several, but one of
them will be right for you). They are not easy to follow, but they are a
hell of a lot better than those for newer cars full of electrical gadgetry
(e.g. my wifes Audi 100, with cruise control, trip computer, little lights
in the electric window switches, electric mirrors, even heated seats.... I
ask you!!). There should also be one in the original owners manual, if you
have (or can obtain) one of them.

Good luck!
