I had a similar problem when re-fitting a speedo after fitting a new (well,
better used) dash.
Basically, it is tricky to get the cable properly seated and attached to the
speedo. The plastic tab on the cable end that is supposed to hold the cable
firmly to the speedo also does a fine job of making it a pig of a job to
attach in the first place. If you think you've managed to get the cable on,
try pulling it off again - if it comes off then you hadn't got it all the
way on in the first place.
Basically, just persevere with trying to attach cable to speedo. I actually
put the back of the car on jackstands so that I could try and attach, start
the car and run in gear to see if I got any reading, then tried again, until
it worked properly.
