I am with you on this one. I sent this email but I must not have sent it to
the list too. Anyway here is my take on reliability.

I gotta tell you, having owned 2 of each (OD and non-od) I have to say
that I will definitely be installing an OD in mine when the wife loosens her
stronghold. The only problem I ever has on my highly modified Spit with the
OD was the stupid switch in the shifter. It would shock me every time it
rained and I had to use it. It was all around a poor switch. I mounted a
toggle switch on the dash to fix this problem.

Mind you I was not delicate on that car. in fact I BEAT THE PISS out of it.
It lasted me 30k under the worst conditions possible. Then I sold it and
lost track of it, so I don't know how much longer it was driven. The other
one with OD was only in my possession for abot 6 months and not driven much.

Now this non-OD tranny has worn or actually non existent syncros in second
and first. The other one I owned also lost syncros, but I think it was 3rd
on that one. So my experience with non-od trannys has been very bad.

Next thing I have a problem with is highway driving. My current car is
horrible on the highway. I drive in a highly traveled area where the speed
limit on the interstate and people are doing over 80mph on a normal day.
With the OD in my other (now gone) spit this was not an issue. With this
one it is downright scary. I simply avoid the interstate now when driving
it. I personally cannot wait to get OD.

I think given the option of a free tranny, clutch and labor, I would have
gone the same route though, depending on finances at the time.
