I believe he is referring to the 1800cc MG B series engine found in the
MGB's and MGA's. Not the Midget 1500 engine which is the same as the spit
engine.
As for beefing up the 1500 motor:
1) Pin the thrust washers or have MGB washers machined in
2) Hotter Cam - You may or may not want to have cam bearings
machined in.
I use a Piper 285. Try Elgin Cams at www.elgincams.com
3) Better carbs - I like the HS4s, but the WEBER DCOE (not DGAV)
would be OK as well.
4) High Compression pistons (9:1)
5) balanced rotating mass (rods, pistons, crank, flywheel, pulley).
I also balanced the pressure plate.
6) Vernier Gear set? (Ted Schumacher has TR6 sets that can be used
on the spit motor)
7) Match the ports on the intake, exhaust, and head.
8) Better exhaust with either a 4-2-1 or a 4-1 header.
The 4-2-1 is better for street and the 4-1 is better for high
RPM racing.
9) Drill out the main oil galleries and use the larger capacity oil pump
10)Oil cooler
11)Polish the head, make nice D shaped pockets under the valves, and
reshape the combustion chamber as per the comp manual.
12)ARP head studs.
13)Roller rockers
14)Non viscous fan and water pump?
THat's all I can think of off the top of my head. How fast do you want to
go? How much do you want to spend? How long do you expect this engine to
last?
Talk to Ted Schumacker in Ohio. He's one of the best people knowledgewise
on these engines. Joe Curry on this list is a great source as well. His
1st suggestion will probably be to get a 1300 motor.
