Actually the physical dimensions (size) of all the Spitfire tanks for all
years are the same. The reduction of about a gallon was accomplished
(probably around 74-76 model year) by using an extended filler neck (which
basically prevents one from filling the tank completely) to provide an
expansion area inside the tank, just above the fuel when filled. This was
used instead of a large expansion tank in the trunk area that earlier
Spitfires had. This was required when emission regulations mandated vapor
recovery systems for fuel vapor containment. The later models use a small
cylindrical fuel separator just above the tank to keep raw, liquid fuel
from entering the charcoal canister.
