I do nuisance trapping, and it's very doubtful the problem is squirrels. Much
more likely, it's rats, mice or chipmunks. Squirrels nest high, and cars are
not high. Rats mice and chipmunks nest low, and cars are down low. You can
determine absolutely by the droppings.
Do not go relocating animals with a live trap. It is illegal virtually
everywhere in the country, with good reason. It is cruel to the animals, very
few survive, and the person who you dumped them on tends not to appreciate it.
I would certainly prosecute anyone I caught doing it on my land.
Rat traps, with bait, work well. So do poisons. There are newer and more
powerful chemicals then Warfan on the market, and these poisons are usually
available at agricultural supply stores. However, any animal that consumes the
dead poisoned rat will become poisoned themselves. If you've got a trapper
friend who's willing to loan you some 110 conibears, or something like some #1
jump traps, you can do well with them also.
For keeping them gone;
block egress everywhere possible,
Disturb the animals frequently by opening the hood and such.
Eradicate food sources (bird feeders are #1),
Mix capcasin with your bird feeds if you must feed them (available at ag stores,
birds are not bothered by it, but mammals are),
And spray fox urine on your engine and around the car, if you can stand the
smell.
You also need to remove your air filters, because you almost assuredly have
nests in there. If any cars heater or ac doesn't work well, you've also got a
nest in there. Before you start your lawnmower, pull its shroud off and clean
the nest you've probably got in there as well.
