To follow the same idea and take it to it's logical end , find a level piece
of road and do a 3rd or 4th gear acceleration run timing the acceleration
between stsrt and finish rpm , say 2000 to 5000 . Move the timing a couple
degrees until the time starts to fall off , then back up to your best setting
. This works better than listening for ping as some cars , Spit and TR-6 for
example are extremely difficult to hear ping and make their best power well
below the ping threshold . Average a couple or three runs to get the most
accurate results , try to eliminate as many variables , wind , elevation
change etc by running both directions on the road . This although time
consuming , is the best way to get the most from your timing settings , when
you finish , look at your timing with a light so you know what is the best
approximate number for your car .
