an issue. (I 'restored' mine with a Scotchbrite [TM] pad!)

And at this time, I'd like to mention that the rubber-bumpered Spits used a
spoiler that depended on the lower valence for structural support!
Otherwise, only the two end screws hold the thing on, allowing it to
vibrate, and maybe crack. Not only that, but the valence is instrumental in
directing the proper amounts of cooling air past those big bumpers, toward
the radiator.

Moral: Everything on a Spitfire has its purpose.
