I havent done the rings, but I did check over an old engin before I put
it in my car. That envolved taking the pistons out, and checking the
rings. Quite pain less realy, you need a ring compresser to get them
back in. You will need to take the head off, and pop the sump off, all
can be done with engin in car. Undo the big ends pop um out through the
top..
You might wan't to replace your big end bearings whist your there, and
also it's a good idea to have a look for swarf in the oil. That is a
bad sign.
