McCoy,
Here's what I know about the subject:
1. The Later Spits windshield changed from the early ones and the TR6,
etc. This is because the frame is permanently attached to the car.
2. The frame can be bent by people using it to hoist themselves out of
the car over the years
3. Since the glass is different, the seal is also different.
4. You don't always get what you are supposed to. (Inventory, shipping
or supplier errors).
5. Some (Make that "Most") windshield shops are in business to sell
glass not install owner provided glass. Their interest may not be to
provide you with a good fit, but to encourage you to buy their products
at double (or more) the price you paid.
All these factors can contribute to the situation you have.
